Student restaurant Varazdin, public architectural-urban competition for student restaurant and accompanying facilities in campus Varazdin.
Going to college and student life is a big change in every life. Student restaurants, campuses, dormitories… are places that should be optimistic, bright, and interesting places of encounter facing the future. The barrack, which has been turned into a student dormitory, with its exterior, dimension and appearance, cries out for a future-oriented building, which would open a new perspective with its appearance – spatially and architecturally interesting – for students to love it and to use it.
The concept of the student restaurant is an ellipsoid whose membrane is punctured with useful perforations: patio, entrance, window. The building thus becomes a formative accent affirming the value of a wider green area because it is positioned as a pavilion in the park.
A student restaurant is a place that provides to the architects the possibility to put space in the foreground, a place in which there is no need for many partitions and walls. The membrane that encloses and creates solves the possible need for separation. The north and south wings of the dormitories are connected to the old barrack and form a semi-block with a park in the middle.
The public space around the student restaurant is in the park, and the student restaurant is the pavilion/ellipsoid in the park. The park is a public area and a place for rest, socializing, but also a place to access the dormitory and restaurant.
The restaurant is divided into two parts, à la carte and self-service area. From the windshield, users are redirected to one or another restaurant that are functionally separated by a large central atrium where during the fine weather students can also dine.
