Jug 4

Jug IV in Osijek

CONTEXT

The area of Jug IV in Osijek represents an urban zone located southeast of the city center, near important transport routes and other infrastructure facilities, and is mostly undeveloped. The proposed solution – a vision for urban development of the area – aims to create an inclusive residential neighborhood that includes residential, commercial, recreational, and public spaces, promotes sustainable mobility and ecological responsibility, and ensures a high quality of life for all social groups.

CONCEPT

The neighborhood is designed to accommodate up to 5,000 residents with a variety of housing typologies – from C-shaped multi-family buildings with terraced ends to smaller residential buildings and apartments tailored for elderly people or individuals with disabilities. In the central part of the neighborhood, a multifunctional center is planned around a pond – serving as the urban center of the district and its wider area. It will be connected by green corridors to the residential zones, sports facilities, a primary school, a kindergarten, a health clinic, a public health center, a church, a market selling ecological produce and healthy food, an indoor swimming pool and sports hall, as well as a gallery for exhibitions and cultural events.

Public spaces are designed to encourage social interaction, outdoor activities, and a sense of community.

On the southern side of the pond, a landscaped promenade has been created with walkways, sunbathing areas, outdoor sports courts, recreational zones, and hospitality venues, including a restaurant in the park and a bathing area.

The blue-green infrastructure in the Jug 4 neighborhood is envisioned as an integrated system that connects natural ecosystems with the urban structure of the neighborhood, with the goal of mitigating climate change, improving the microclimate, and creating a sustainable and resilient urban space. The foundation of the concept is based on the principles of urban resilience, circular economy, and sustainable design.

CURIOSITIES

In the formation of the spatial matrix of the Jug 4 neighborhood, the practice of the regulatory framework of the neighborhood was followed, which superimposed infrastructure corridors and a green network onto the spatial grid. The fundamental principle was the alternating positioning of traffic routes designed for vehicular traffic and those designed as green pedestrian-cycling corridors. This system creates a clear and secure movement structure that equally favors both motorized and non-motorized traffic, while maintaining high standards of quality of life for future residents.
