student dormitory Dubrovnik

Student dormitory Dubrovnik, an urban-architecture public project for competition for Student Dormitory Complex; honorable mention for our concept.

CONTEXT

The city of Dubrovnik is one of the few cities that has a university but no student dormitory. Students find it difficult to find accommodation because the season in the City lasts more than eight months. Dubrovnik has the highest percentage of foreign student arrivals in Croatia, so there is an obvious need to build a student dormitory.

CONCEPT

The concept of the student dormitory complex in Dubrovnik is based on the design of the ‘inner world’ modeled on Dubrovnik’s cloister-type buildings. The fenced outdoor space provides silence, peace, greenness, the possibility of a concentration, the inner world …

For students, it is necessary to have the opportunity to find space in the student dormitory complex that will provide them peace and opportunity for concentration outside the student room, so special attention is paid to the design of common open areas. Such spaces are designed as ‘holes’ in the main building, green spaces for students that offer presence and distance at the same time – depending on the person’s desire.

The Mediterranean garden is created as a patio with indigenous plants on the ground level that represents the ‘heart’ of open space; entrances and restaurants. The concept of the student dormitory complex is in the fusion of architecture and horticulture.

CURIOSITIES

The vision of the development of the student dormitory lobby is moving towards full openness to the public with the possibility of building modern greenhouses that would function with the main building as an educational center and a specific botanical garden, greenery.
