Bay Sumartin, a project that received the honorable mention at the urban-architecture public competition for the beach and recreation area of Sumartin Bay in Dubrovnik.

Sumartin Bay is a part of the Lapad peninsula which is of great importance for the economic and social life of Dubrovnik. It is located 4.5 km northwest of the historic center of the city and is a popular city beach and is one of the few sandy and pebble beaches in Dubrovnik that still has family character.

Public spaces and a solid urban matrix are the elements that form the image of the city. The vision of a multi-cultural touristic city is realized through planned and arranged public spaces with modern facilities.

The proposed location is one of the urban life centers of Dubrovnik, and our concept is based on the transformation of bay Sumarin into a highly urbanized square with a beach and waterfront. The bay thus becomes a space of diverse opportunities and facilities, an area for socializing and expression, rest and shopping, working and studying… The idea is to provide pedestrians, residents of Dubrovnik, visitors, and tourists the most comfortable space which they can use the entire year. A clear built Z line of closed and semi-open facilities would also be a promenade with an art gallery, storage rooms, recreational facilities, a restaurant, a coffee bar, locker rooms, …

The majority of the surface is made from Brac stone, and the parts of the square will be paved with recycled rubber in different colors which will provide full Mediterranean expression. Recycled rubber can be replaced in the case of its damage, and its softness allows kids new places for play and exploration. The street furniture is made of concrete and stone, and the seats are coated with wood.

The trees and greenery have been retained for their ambient and horticultural qualities, and a particularly valuable is an olive grove park equipped with several elements of street furniture which becomes a place of a different sense of use, contemplating space where quiet and cultural activities take place. The colors of the triangular surfaces are inspired by the colors of Dubrovnik painters such as Josip Trostomann and Ivan Perak.
